Leticia's Story

Leticia has dedicated her career to improving the lives of students, because she believes we have a collective duty to educate, expose, and empower young people. She began her career as a scientist in Virginia, and served as a mentor and reading coach for students in Richmond City Public Schools whenever she was away from the lab.  After relocating to Birmingham and earning a Masters in Medical Science, she trained educators in science and technologies to increase student engagement in Birmingham City Schools.

She currently serves as the founding Executive Director of the Sixth Avenue Community Development Corporation where 95% of the students in her out-of-school programs have gained life skills and exposure to new learning opportunities. During the pandemic alone, she provided over 40,000 meals to children, opened a student center for remote learners, and partnered with Birmingham Talks to bring early literacy classes to her district.

In 2021, she was elected as the District 6 Representative of the Birmingham Board of Education and has greatly contributed to advances in Birmingham City Schools. She chairs the Policy Committee and has served on the Science Textbook Selection, Calendar, and Superintendent Evaluation Committees. A 2022 Project Corporate Leadership graduate, Leticia leveraged corporate partnerships to establish a hydroponics lab in the middle school in her district. During this term, she completed the Public Education Leadership Project at Harvard University, collaborating with district and national leaders to advance post-secondary preparedness throughout Birmingham City Schools. She has proudly worked with educators to launch the state of Alabama's first-ever Dual Language Immersion program to improve academic outcomes, cultural awareness, and cognitive skills of young learners.

Committed to Community

Leticia has an undeniable commitment to community and a proven record of leveraging relationships to benefit students and families. She has partnered with dozens of service-based organizations such as The Cohill Foundation, The Surge Project, Regenerate Society, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing and Department of Nutrition Sciences, Titusville Library and others.
